Just a note to let Lesz and Clinton, and whoever else may be marking our work, that both Simon and myself work on this site, and it is my property. Thus, no plagiarism or concept theft was involved. Thanks happy.gif

Echoes

Posted by Mike on 18th of October 2008

I've not forgotten about this site, or any of you guys who actually read this. All one of me. Dev is still occuring, honest. This site will likely get a makeover soon. I'm gonna try and kick start this site again when it does, I'll pour loads of cash into advertising. Please keep checking.

Rollback

Posted by Mike on 08th of September 2008

We have returned to our previous host over issues with the new location. This will only be until a new suitable host is found.

I have updated the nameservers and we are now migrating. This news post will disappear when it is successful.

Update

Posted by Mike on 13th of August 2008

We have still not moved to the VPS. There have been issues with DNS zoning which still need to be resolved. I will update again once we have moved.

Moving Hosts

Posted by Mike on 17th of June 2008

We will be moving to a VPS soon. This will open up new opportunities for the site and game, but will come with a little downtime. Please bear with me, I doubt it'll be a smooth transition.

Progress

Posted by Mike on 25th of April 2008

So... Ignore that last post. I've done absolutely nothing for that smaller game. However, I've had a major breakthrough.

Interactive Screenshot #1

That's not a final image of the game whatsoever; it's a demonstration of technologies we will be using in the game. There's not even a promise that we will retain use of iFrames - they are a technology I am still wary to use due to their lack of support until recent times. However, the morale that, with the assistance of a friend of mine, Avi, has been realised - I feel that the side project is now a distraction. Development will push forward.

It's been a while since I last updated the site

Posted by Mike on 14th of March 2008

I have been incredibly busy these last few months. However, I'm posting this to announce a breakthrough in Modoeren's future. It comes in the form of another game.

I will be creating a relatively simple RTS to gain a member base for the website. The site will be up and running soon here. I haven't been programming much recently due to education and finance, but I have been doing a lot of paperwork for the site (I've completely worn out two A4 notebooks each possessing 250 double-sided, lined pages now) and this will assist in speeding up development progress.

The entire database structure for both games has been developed and normalised completely. A layout is under development for Modoeren Universe, but for Tactics there's been no consideration into such frivilous matters just yet. Expect another update soon.

Development shifted to the Wiki

Posted by Mike on 10th of December 2007

The technical planning of the game has now initiated. Documentation and planning of this process can be found at the wiki, under the category of "Development_Documents". Discussion will still take place on the forums, as it is easier to follow it on the flat system that the forums use, than on the wiki.

Some bad news

Posted by Mike on 19th of October 2007

A couple of days back, my HDD failed. Today, my GPU has failed. Unfortunately for me, I'm not that great at practicing what I preach, and... I've lost pretty much everything I had written for Modoeren except for what you see here. Yes, I'm an idiot.

This puts us back to square one.

I am probably going to enlist some help in the development of Modoeren now, to speed up the development so that I'm not just wasting money by pouring it into expensive hosting.

Updates

Posted by Mike on 07th of September 2007

Hello guys, sorry it's been so long since you've been updated. Here's what's going on.

Coding Started

I've been working on some basic classes to shape the visuals and data structure of the game. I've not got very far; in fact, all I can do is identify what type of player is logged on and create menus accordingly, but it's a start. Hopefully development will get well under way soon.

Removing Progress Bars

I will be removing the progress bars from the Development Status page. It's hard to estimate how far along with the project we truly are and by the looks of it, the bars are out of date. They're misleading and unnecessary. You only need to know when it's 100% done.

I could really do with some input at the moment from anyone who's reading this... the project is kind of quiet. Please leave some comments, else this project will just turn into mine again.

IRC Channel

Posted by Mike on 16th of July 2007

I have finally got round to forming an IRC channel. We're #modoerenuniverse on Quakenet (UK servers if you can't find us from connecting to other ones). I will be idling in the channel until we can register ourselves an L bot. Hope to see you in there! happy.gif

Possibility of losing Hosting

Posted by Mike on 17th of June 2007

There is a possibility that Modoeren will experience a month or two of downtime. The family's budgeting, and the webhosting that modoeren is on is a £30/month luxury which we just can't afford. Active members, I recommend keeping in contact with each other via email. I'm hoping to find a way to be able to fund the webhosting, most likely via reselling. I'm sorry guys sad.gif

Advertising finished

Posted by Mike on 28th of May 2007

Well my advertising funds have run out. The game still needs a lot more fresh ideas and I'm gonna have to rely either on donations or word of mouth for a while. Let's work on getting this place active happy.gif

Major bug fixed

Posted by Mike on 21st of May 2007

I've just discovered and fixed a major bug in the forum: people weren't able to reply to threads. This came about despite no change in the underlying code. The fix came from removing an outdated and unecessary bug fix. I've now also implemented some basic BBCode, and Smilies happy.gif. A popup page will soon follow that details how to use them.

Recent Events and Ideas

Posted by Mike on 20th of May 2007

Well, things are generally running smoothly (I've had a small debug session with my girlfriend recently which has solved some issues) and I'm pleased with the progress which the site has been making. There's still a couple of changes to make, i.e. I need to update the development team page, and there are some more user, moderative and administrative features which need to be implemented. I'd like to hear from you as to what you want to see on this part of the site. I'm toying with (for users):

Avatar Upload
Private Messaging
Polls
A referral system
BBCode

One major thing I would like to hear about is the front page of this site. Is it welcoming enough? Would an introduction not unlike the first news post (which can also be found on the features page) be better for the front of the site, with a separate page for news? I would like as much user input as possible; remember, this is as much your site as it is mine.

Advertising Begun

Posted by Mike on 17th of May 2007

Well, I got fed up of waiting and in the end I've made this layoutling myself. It's fully functional, the forums are more coherent, and the site is ready. I've begun advertising; poured £30 into Google AdWords (£25 goes to actually advertising, £5 setup). That should get in about 20 or 30 members; of course, not all will be active, and not all clicks will generate members, but I'm looking forward to having a small base community from which to stem out from.

I'd also like to welcome Greebot to the team: he's a schoolfriend who excels in all the things the technical side of this site needs: programming and a good grasp of maths and physics. He'll also be moderating the forums lightly.

Forum system complete

Posted by Mike on 25th of April 2007

Moderation and post editing are now both implemented. The public concept stage is now underway. Soon we will have a new, better (both visually and functionally) layout, and when that point is reached, I shall begin a Google AdWords advertising campaign to raise awareness and interest in the project. This is a point which I have been striving for for the past two years. Discussion will be taking place in the forums, and I encourage more synchronous discussion over email or instant messenger, also.

Forum Beta Testing

Posted by Mike on 20th of April 2007

The forum is ready for beta testing. Features that are not yet functioning are:

Post editing.
Moderative features.

These will be implemented shortly. After that, I shall write up the static content, and a period of public conception will start.

New layout and news system

Posted by Mike on 06th of March 2007

I've converted to a layout I designed (the best I've designed, in my opinion, but mine is an acquired taste in web design), and from WordPress to my own news submission and commenting system. In doing so, I've laid the foundations of the system to be used for all features of the site save the wiki. Feel free to register using the link on the right - I have not set up a control panel system for users yet, so be careful with the data you submit for now, as you cannot edit it yet. After submitting this news, I will get to work on the control panel after this, as it's one of the most important features of the site.

I aim to get the following features complete before the next news update:

- User Control Panel
- Static Content (Development Status, Features, Development Team, Hosting pages)
- Basic forum system (will expand in the future)

It's likely that the next news post will not be for a while.
